The city of Hammond, Indiana, is rallying around one of its own as Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. embarks on a heartwarming mission to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer through a unique demonstration of solidarity and support.

In 2025, the spotlight is on 8-year-old Izabella Angarica, a brave little girl recently diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia, a severe form of blood cancer. Her case started a ripple of support that has engaged the entire town, united under a common cause.
Understanding Izabella's Journey
Izabella, a second grader at Lincoln Elementary, was diagnosed just before Christmas. The diagnosis has not only impacted her health but has ripple effects on her family, creating challenges that touch on every aspect of life—including travel to treatment and lost income due to caregiving responsibilities. Her mother must balance work while caring for Izabella, who has now become wheelchair-bound from the effects of her illness.
“For a child who should be filled with laughter and running around with friends, Izabella is facing obstacles that no child should endure,” Mayor McDermott shared in his announcement.
How the Community Can Help
The mayor is setting a fundraising target of $15,000, which will directly support the Angarica family. Every dollar raised will go toward their bills and transportation costs to appointments at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
